How common is stress?

Right now in Scotland, in fact right now across the world, one in five of us has a problem with stress. While many of these problems will be short-term, over a lifetime, almost one in two of us with have a problem with stress. Stress here does not mean a fit of the blues or feeling a bit uptight. It means a level of problem that badly affects your life (and, often, the lives of those close to you). So stop thinking you are the only one - these are very common problems.

Stress is the most common problem GPs deal with.

Most people with marked stress problems either do not go to their GP in the first place often due to stigma or are not picked up by the GP as having a stress problem. So the real number is a great deal higher than even the reports suggest.
